There are hit movies, super hit movies, good movies, block busters… but once in a while comes a movie (a love story) that changes the entire movie scene. Every generation has that one romantic movie that they will always remember. And if you are very, very lucky you can get such a movie twice in that special period in your life since these movies seem to come once every decade (sometimes twice a decade).
Though “Khel Khel Mein” (1975- Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh and Rakesh Roshan) was a blockbuster movie which is even remembered today (as much for it’s songs as for the movie itself) it was the 1973 Raj Kapoor directed film “Bobby” (Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia) that became that film for the 70’s generation. This film changed the entire way love stories were going to be made. With “Bobby” the teenage love story had arrived in Bollywood (Oh God how I hate that term).
For the 80’s generation “that” film would be a film that was inspired by “Bobby” but which in my personal opinion was much better then the above mentioned – “Love Story” (1981- Kumar Gaurav, Vijayeta Pandit, Amjad Khan, Vidya Sinha, Rajendra Kumar and Danny Denzonpa). The film which had a debutant hero and heroine in the lead was indebted to Rahul Dev Burman for the killer soundtrack he composed without which this movie would not have become that big a hit.
It seemed that it would take a very very long time for a new film to arrive which could have an impact on the youth the way “Love Story” had. Some other movies became very successful and announced the arrival of new stars like the 1983 movie “Betaab” (Sunny Deol, Amrita Singh). Because when we look back at these movies, the movies that have had that effect on our lives and made a lasting impression for the most part are movies with a total new cast (barring an exception like 1994 movie “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”).
That is until 1988…
Nasir Hussain was a writer (who started with the 1953 film “Anarkali”) who turned director. And thankfully for movie fans all over the world Nasir Hussain turned producer and established Nasir Hussain Films. Which movie buff who grew up in the 60’s, 70’s or 80’s doesn’t remember this intro…
Nasir Hussain went on to produce (and direct) some of the biggest blockbusters to have come out of the Hindi film industry in this golden age of the Hindi Film Industry.
The 80’s however were not so kind to Nasir Hussain. The movies he produced (or directed) were either not that big hits or outright flopped. The sad part is that some of these movies were not that bad…some of them were even good. It was just that the times had changed and the paying public preferred heroes with guns over heroes with guitars (which were what the heroes had in the Nasir Hussain musicals). The strange part is that one of the biggest hits of 1982 was the Reena Roy – Kamal Hassan movie “Sanam Teri Kasam” which was a blatant copy of many a Nasir Hussain film!
But the strange thing is that the Hindi film industry and the paying public still had confidence in Nasir Hussain and his banner. This was mostly due to his hits of the 60’s and 70’s. But primarily due to two movies which are forever imbedded in the minds of lovers of Hindi films.
After the flopping of “Zabardast” (1985 – Sunny Deol, Jaya Pradha, Sanjeev Kumar, Rajeev Kapoor and Rati Agnihotri) Nasir Hussain decided to launch his nephew as a hero – the son of his little brother, producer Tahir Hussain. This nephew of his had been his assistent director in his last few films. A script was written and shooting was about to start.
In the meantime Nasir Hussain’s son Mansoor Khan was writing a script which he would direct after his father’s movie.
When his father got ill his sister Nusrat (who is the mother of actor Imran Khan) and the “hero-nephew” -who were the co writers of the movie- tried to persuade Mansoor Khan to take over from his dad and start this movie. Mansoor Khan relented and left that script he was writing uncomplete and decided to work on “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak”. The script he was working on would be the film Nasir Hussain Films would produce after “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” – “Joh Jeeta Wohi Sikandar”.
Aamir Khan – the nephew of Nasir Hussain who would be the hero of the movie – and his sister Nusrat and Mansoor Khan started reworking the script. Nasir Hussain was of the opinion that when the audience leaves the theatre they should be happy so a film should always have a happy ending and never a sad ending. This was something he had learned from his Rajesh Khanna – Asha Parekh movie “Baharon Ke Sapne”. When the film was made a sad ending had been filmed where the hero and heroine died at the end. To his big surprise the film bombed miserably. A new ending was shot and edited in the movie where both lived but it was too late. Audiences expected something from a Nasir Hussain movie and he had not delivered. After that Nasir Hussain movies had happy endings – so did the first draft of the script of “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak”.
Mansoor Khan, Aamir Khan and Nusrat the new writers however were of the opinion that a happy ending would not work for the film. When you watch QSQT even today although you laugh and smile you have this premonition that this can’t end well -something fatal is going to happen. If the film would have had a happy ending – they reasoned – the entire build up would go to waste and the impact of the movie would not be the same. They talked with Nasir Hussain but he didn’t budge. Finally it was decided that 2 endings would be shot and it would later be decided which ending should be used. And so it happened. Two endings were shot. When Nasir Hussain saw the ending which Mansoor Khan, Nusrat and Aamir Khan preferred he realized the new generation was right and it was decided to use the emotional sad ending. And let’s be honest -it’s that ending that makes the movie what it is today. Like if the second ending for “Sholay” would have been shot and Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) would not have died would “Sholay” still have the same impact!? The same goes for QSQT.
The second filmed ending of QSQT has never been released and it was not certain how it would have played out, Well here is a sneak peak into what that second ending of QSQT would have been ilke…
For the female lead opposite Aamir Khan the search was on for a girl who could handle the role well. This wasn’t a movie made to launch a hero where the leading lady would be secondary. In QSQT the role of Reshmi was as important and as strong (if not stronger) then the hero’s. An actress was chosen who had debuted in the film “Sultanat” (1986) opposite Shashi Kapoor’s son Karan Kapoor. Though the film also starred Anita Raj and Sridevi and was the first film in which Dharmendra and Sunny Deol shared screen space that film had bombed. Mansoor Khan however saw something in this girl and Juhi Chawla was signed.
It must be mentioned that the way the script was written it was quite novel in those times. The fact that it is not the hero who chases the heroine but it is the heroine who take the initiative. And this gamble payed off. It worked big time in the film and it’s this aspect that gives the movie some of it’s big charm.
Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla seemed made for each other in the movie – a match made in heaven and a great on-screen couple was born.
The succes of the film -which was a small film compared to the previous Nasir Hussain films- was dependent on 2 aspects : music and performances.
Starting with performances. The supporting cast had some very good actors in it of whom none were really known faces at that time. When you watch the movie today you will recognize more then half of them since quite a few of them went on to make a name for themselves.

Now for the music of the movie. Nasir Hussain films had music scored by Rahul Dev Burman and he created some of the biggest hits of Hindi film songs for movies prodced by Nasir Hussain. But when Mansoor Khan took over the reigns of the movie he had problems with Rahul Dev Burman because he was “Pancham uncle” to Mansoor. And Mansoor said he would not be able to turn down music made by his uncle or be businesslike with him. So it was decided to take another music director. Because of the friendship between Nasir Hussain and R.D. Burman, Burman did not mind and gave his blessings. He even gave the clap for the mahuratshot.
Anand -Milind were chosen to be the music directors of QSQT. They were the sons of veteran music composer Chitragupt. They has started their career as music directors with the 1984 movie “Abe Aayega Mazaa”. The first 5 films they scored the music for were flops and so was the music. Though in 1987 a movie was released which was a sleeper hit. A remake of “Beverly Hills Cop” directed by Pankaj Parashar and starring Nasseerudin Shah and Archana Puransingh in the lead roles (and Amitabh Bachchan in an special appearance) the film “JALWA” had music by Anand-Milind and was a hit.
The movies which followed flopped again and so did the music.
But the fate of the actors, producer, director, music composers and singers would change overnight with the release of “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” and it’s soundtrack…
Each and every song in this movie composed by Anand-Milind and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri became instant classics and are remembered and sung even today. Some of the songs are even re-recorded and used in new movies which is very very painful to see and hear.
Alka Yagnik – who had started singing for movies in 1981 for the film “Roohi” – was mostly known for having sung the female version of the Amitabh Bachchan hit “Mere Anagane Mein” picturized on Raakhee Gulzar. This lady who would go on to become the queen of playback singing in the 90’s had some minor hits in this period.
Udit Narayan had been singing for Hindi films since 1980 (“Unnees Bees” and “Sindoor”). Again just like Alka he had some minor hits but nothing really big. They were never chosen for the main lead actors in big films.
I would like to note here that though they were not that successful before QSQT, one of my all time favourite Alka Yagnik – Udit Narayan songs is actually the very first duet they recorded together way back for the 1983 film Sannata for music director Rajesh Roshan.
Everything changed when the soundtrack of “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” released. Anand-Milind became two of the most sought after music directors in the industry and Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan who were the only two singers on the soundtrack had finally arrived. Can you believe that for the entire film there were just two singer who sang all the songs (ahh those great times!).
Each and every song of this movie is a real gem. Even the not so famous ones that barely last a minute…
“Papa Kehte Hain Bada Naam Karega” became an anthem for the youth that is still sung today. But all songs became a rage be it “Akele Hian Toh Kya Ghum Hain”, “Ae Mere Humsafar” or my second all time favourite duet by Alka and Udit and my most favourite song from the entire movie…
Like I said earlier this movie established Mansoor Khan, Anand-Milind, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan and gave a new breath of life to Nasir Hussain Films. Even the character actors all benefitted from this film – Goga Kapoor even went on to play the villain in many Amitabh Bachchan films, Alok Nath and Reema Lagoo… well we all know that. To be quite honest I think Sooraj Baryatja was quite inspired by this movie.
And finally this movie gave the industry that new great on-screen Jodi after Raj Kapoor – Nargis, Dev Anand – Waheeda Rehman and Dharmendra – Hema Malini : Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla.
The film has some cameo’s in it: Little Raj is played by Aamir’s nephew Imran Khan who would go on to make his debut in the Aamir Khan – Mansoor Khan produced “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na”.
During the song “Papa Kehte Hain” when the line “Mera Toh Sapne Hai Ek Chehra” is sung the girl wearing red whom Aamir flirts with was his then wife Reena (see photo 1).
The three gunda’s who tease Juhi in the jungle and later try to beat Aamir up… the guy in the yellow shirt and glasses is Faisal Khan, Aamir’s little brother who would later star with Aamir in one of the worst Aamir movies ever -“Mela”
When I saw the movie the first time in 1988 the only actor I knew from the cast was Dalip Tahil as I had seen hin in the 1986 Feroz Khan, Sridevi, Anil Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia movie “Jaanbaaz”. I must say that Dalip did a great job in this movie and for many years he would be in almost every Aamir Khan movie.
Beena Bannerjee (who is the daughter of yesteryear star Pradeep Kumar) would become the screen mom for Aamir Khan in many more movies.
Can you imagine Alok Nath and Reema Lagoo in such a movie in which they are not married to one another or are samdhis of each other.
Shehzad Khan would go on to make a lasting impression on cinema lovers all over the world with his spoof of his own dad Ajit in another Aamir Khan classic – Andaz Apna Apna (1994 – Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karishma Kapoor).
Raj Zutshi would go on to marry Nusrat and be a step dad to Imran Khan who makes his debut in this movie as small Raj (the same way Aamir Khan had portrayed the childhood version of his uncle Tariq in “Yaadon Ki Baraat”).
Udit Narayan would go on to become the main voice of Aamir Khan. It was a successful team like Raj Kapoor – Mukesh, Kishore Kumar – Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar – Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar – Amitabh Bachchan, Mohd. Rafi – Shammi Kapoor. As far as I know the last time Udit sang for Aamir in a movie was for the 2005 flop “Mangal Panday”.
